Judge Remains Calm, as Defendant Rants
JAY STREET — Kings County Supreme Court Justice Michael Gary reportedly remained calm and collected on the bench last week as a defendant cursed at him, told him “f–k you” and called him a racial slur.
Gary was in the process of sentencing 20-year-old Sequan Downing for robbing and attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl at the Clark Street subway station in January 2010.
The young teenager was on a Brooklyn-bound 3-train at 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning when Downing tried to rob her of her iPod. When she resisted, she testified, Downing subsequently attempted to rape and molest her at the Clark Street station beneath the St. George Hotel on Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights.
Gary said Downing was trying to teach the girl “a lesson” by raping her, as he continued to sentence Downing to 17-and-a-half to 22 years in prison, while Downing continued to rant. Despite the insults, Gary denied sentencing him to consecutive sentences for the two sex crime convictions, according to the New York Post.
Downing could be heard screaming from the cell outside the courtroom after he was led away in handcuffs.
