Public Hearing on Controversial Cobble Hill Charter School Tuesday

Another Success Academy Planned for Bed-Stuy

By Mary Frost

The New York City Department of Education’s (DOE) controversial proposal to site a new charter school — Success Academy Cobble Hill — in a building complex already housing three existing schools will be considered at a public hearing on Tuesday, November 29, at 6 p.m. at 284 Baltic St. in Brooklyn.

The DOE wants to “co-locate” the new charter school with two existing District 15 secondary schools: Brooklyn School for Global Studies (15K429) and School for International Studies (15K497) and P.S. 368, a District 75 school serving students who are autistic, mentally retarded, or have multiple handicaps.

A co-location means that two or more schools are located in the same building and share common spaces like auditoriums, gymnasiums, and cafeterias.

Success Academy Cobble Hill plans classes for kindergarten through fourth grade, beginning in 2012-2013. Former Council-woman Eva Moskowitz is the head of Success Academy charter schools.

Many parents say that co-locations disrupt existing programs and drain resources from their children. In October, parents from local schools protested the school’s co-location at an information session held by the proposed charter school.

The Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) will vote on the proposed item on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at the High School of Fashion Industries, 225 West 24th Street, Manhattan.

Information about the proposal can be found on the DOE website at http://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/leadership/PEP/publicnotice/20112012/Dec2011Proposals.htm.

The DOE is also proposing to open and co-locate Success Academy Bed-Stuy 2, for kindergarten through fourth grade, in the same building as P.S. 59, located at 211 Throop Avenue, Brooklyn, in Community School District 14, beginning in 2012-2013.

P.S. 59 serves students in kindergarten through fifth grades, and also offers two sections of pre-kindergarten. Information about this proposal can be found on the DOE’s website at http://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/leadership/PEP/publicnotice/20112012/Dec2011Proposals.htm.

Copies are also available in the main office of P.S. 59.

A Joint Public Hearing for this proposal will take place Dec. 6, 2011, at 6 p.m. in Building K059, 211 Throop Avenue, Brooklyn.

The Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) will vote on the proposed item on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at the High School of Fashion Industries, 225 West 24th Street, Manhattan.
