Training for Disaster in Downtown Brooklyn

Cadman Plaza East was set ablaze recently — on purpose — as CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams) volunteers trained with FDNY in extinguishing fires. “In a disaster, members of CERT teams can put out small fires and handle other emergencies,” said FDNY Lt. William Pickett of Engine Company 218 (shown above on left). CERTs are operated by the Office of Emergency Management and are affiliated with community boards. “There are groups all over the city. Call 3-1-1 to volunteer,” he said.
